What city should I move to?
I am moving at the end of this summer. A few of the places I am considering are below with my plans. About me: I have been working in nonprofit management, I have $32,000 saved up, I have no debt other than a small car payment, I have an associates degree in liberal arts, I am very liberal, I am 28 years old, good looking, and gay. I want a bigger gay community, a more liberal city, and a more exciting culture etc. Good weather would be nice too. Where should I move to?
Here are my choices…
Seattle: No friends there or a job. I just love the city.
Miami: Possible job there and I have a good friend there.
Boston: Very good friend there, no job lined up.
Houston: No friends there or a job. I like the city and the weather.
The Cost of Living indexes for these cities (with the US average being 100) are 90.3 for Houston, 117.8 for Miami, 121.5 for Seattle, & 134.0 for Boston. If you were to make the same salary in all 4 cities, it would be most affordable to live in Houston and least affordable to live in Boston.
The percentage of homes being affordable for median incomes are 52.0% for Houston, 35.7% for Boston, 24.3 for Seattle, & 13.1% for Miami so you would be more likely to find an affordable place to live in Houston and least likely in Miami.
Massachusetts and Washington have laws against employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, while Texas and Florida do not. All 4 states have laws that include sexual orientation to existing hate crime laws.
Texas has a state Constitutional Amendment restricting marriage to opposite sex couples, Florida has a state laws restricting marriage to opposite sex couples, Washington as a state laws restricting marriage to opposite sex couples but also recognizes Domestic Partnerships, and Massachusetts recognizes same sex marriage.
Based on this information, where you might find a job, and where you already have friends, this will hopefully help you in your decision (or at least narrow it down to 2).
