Will there be any franchises moving in the foreseeable future?
Phoenix looks like their staying put but look at some of these franchises:
Nashville- Annual playoff contender yet there attendance remains mediocre.
Columbus- the franchise looses millions each year. The “its still going to catch on” excuse cant be used anymore.
Atlanta- Bad attendance, could it result in them packing up?
NY Islanders- Worst attendance in the league.
So could one of these teams end up moving within the next 10 years. And were would they move to?
My guess for were they would move would be:
Quebec City- Proven NHL market with a new arena being built.
Milwaukee- Have an arena (they could even play in Miller Park if they wanted) already and Wisconsin is almost as hockey crazy as Minnesota so why not?
Seattle- Large market with the facilieties already existing and a rivalry with Vancouver maybe?
Phoenix looks like their staying put? The team is losing money and is owned by the league and 6 of the other teams are already losing money, So don’t think that many of them are going to put up with this for much longer.
If they are going to move they would have to move to a venue that would make money not lose less than where they are now. Winnipeg was losing money when it cost less to run a team, ditto for Quebec City and Hartford. So maybe these choices aren’t the best.
If you think Toronto and Buffalo put up a fight with Hamilton as a choice, just watch Chicago when someone mentions Milwaukee. ///ly (that’s similarly for you mathematically challenged) watch Vancouver at the Seattle suggestion.
The only viable location for a successful NHL franchise is Southwestern Ontario, and there is too much money in that location (as an expansion team) for the league to allow another team to move there. Rumour has it that if Thompson (Lord to you plebes) took Phoenix off the leagues hands he’d be sold the Southern Ontario (or Onterrible to our herring choker friends) franchise over the screams of Blackberry.
