Can a person make their way to California by ship?

I want to go to California, but no money. A person can clear the path. I on the west coast of Canada I want to work for BC Ferries to Victoria and Washington State Ferries to Seattle, then for the longest part and the last I like to work for Carnival Cruise Lines all the way to California. Also, what kind of jobs could I do? I'm not much of an artist, but could try my hand at singing and dancing even though they can not tap dance. I think not allow any type of adult entertainment that is out, but I could cook and clean too. Is it possible? thanks.
