There is no standard definition for a building "flagship, perhaps something that is common to all these landmark buildings is that they was built with the objective of serving as a historic building. Pretty silly, you said, but it is difficult to find another similarity between a list that includes buildings as the Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower, Burj al Arab UL, the Statue of Liberty, Seattle Space Needle, the Colosseum and the Empire State Building.

All are exceptionally high (eg, the Taj Mahal, Opera), all are incredibly high (eg White House) and can not be classified as most beautiful building design. So what really makes your style? It's probably the unique design concept, the symbolic value and also when they were built, making them iconic.

Rather than explore these buildings on a case by case basis rather than discuss as a group.

Eiffel Tower:

It's hard to imagine how a structure which has been criticized in the harshest form of experts and artists of his time, which was created to be dismantled soon after achieved its basic objective (Exposure Universal) is now considered the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower, which was once considered a blot on the landscape of Paris, is now visited by millions and millions of people every year because I think it is one of the most beautiful man-made structure.

Sydney Opera House:

Sydney Opera House took nearly 16 years its completion and has suffered many setbacks during this period. With all sorts of problems, including rising costs, how is that projects politicized, changes in the original design, Jorn Utzon (architect original) to waive the building turned out to be worth all the effort, once completed. Located in Sydney Harbor, this work teacher has a unique design, it is not surprising Jorn Utzon won the Pritzker Prize, the award celebrates the most of any architecture.

Burj Ul Arab

The newest addition to the list of landmark buildings in the world, is probably Burj Ul Arab in Dubai, the second tallest hotel in the world. Built entirely in 920 feet of reclaimed land, Burj Ul Arab is masterfully built to resemble an Arabian Dhow sailing, simple but elegant. The simplicity in the design ends basic, though, as the interior becomes as rich as can be a world class resort.

Empire State Building:

The Empire State Building is one of most beloved monuments in the United States of America. Built in the era of the Great Depression, which was completed in an extraordinary period of less than 2 years. Remained the most tallest building in the world for many years and still holds the 15th place on the list of world's tallest buildings.
