seattle automotive schools
What can I do to put myself far ahead of other applicants at a dealership for mechanic/technician position?

Alright heres the thing.

I am currently 17 and going to a community college near Seattle, WA thanks to a program for qualified students (get to earn associates degree junior and senior year of high school).

I am studying automotive mechanics and plan to get ASE certified by the end of my senior year.

Now i guess with some patience and being willing to relocate..in time, you could get a job as a mechanic/technition at a car dealership. But I have problems with relocating and i want to stay in the seattle or portland, oregon area that I grew up in.

What things could i do to make employers really want to hire me? I was considering after my certification and my associates degree i could go to a mechanics school..but i really need some inside information…any help?

In all honesty, when I was doing my TAFE course (Cert II Auto – Light Vehicle), I found it immensely hard to even get work experience which was mandatory or I’d fail the course.

I was rejected 6 times in less than 4 hours when looking for work experience.

My lecturer who happened to once work for RAC (which is the company every apprentice should die to work for), found me work experience with them. I did two weeks, was asked to hand in my resume, and BAM – I got the job. 3 out of 40 people were selected, and I was one of them.

So the best thing I could advise is to get whatever pre-app certs you can, or any certs you have that relate to the automotive industry and use them in your favour. If you do go to study automotive, make damn good friends with your lecturers because they’re the ones with the connections.
And when you do land an opportunity, work at it as hard as you can.

I won’t deny that it is incredibly hard to become a technician in the auto industry – thumb me down all you like, but it’s a mans’s industry – not a womans’. There is quite a lot of sexism going around.
