In an effort to limit the risks of young drivers are exposed in their first years of driving, the New York State has adopted new laws Stricter limits for young drivers. New laws which came into force February 22, 2010, to strengthen New York Graduated Driving Law (GDL) for drivers under 21 years.

The new laws passed by New York GDL:

This license has been eliminated and now the law requires all drivers aged 18 and have a learner's permit for at least six months before being eligible to write the road test and receive Junior license.
  • Increase the number of hours of supervised driving before scheduling the test Review – Prior to the enactment of new laws, parents or guardians of adolescents had to certify that the youth had received at least the 2nd hours of supervised driving experience to pass test. The new law requires parents or guardians of youth under 18 certifies that your teenager received a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience with at least 15 of those hours occur after sunset.
  • Reduce the number of passengers of the family rather than two-one – Under the old law, adolescents have been limited to carrying two passengers in the family. The new law reduces the number of passengers who are not members of the family to another for all drivers under 21.

Another law in New York that came into force in November 2009 makes it illegal to text or use any electronic device laptop when the vehicle is in motion. This law applies to drivers of all ages in the State of New York.
